Draft Result Drafted in the 2009 Draft by the Denver Broncos in the 2nd round with the #5 pick.
Denver moves up and many think it is to grab Maualuga but instead they go with cornerback Alphonso Smith. Smith is a talented and instinctive but undersized corner and trading a 2010 first round pick for him was a questionable decision.

Strengths If players were drafted on production alone Alphonso Smith would be a first rounder. All-around athlete with great speed and leaping ability. Can run with receivers in man coverage and has good awareness for zone. Excellent coverage instincts and ball skills led to a nation's best 8 interceptions including 3 returned for touchdowns. 1st team All-ACC and 3rd team AP All American as a junior. Has limited kick return experience. Has the confidence and athleticism to be a starting corner but his size will hinder to draft stock.

Weaknesses Undersized for an elite corner. At 5'9" he lacks the height to compete with taller recievers for jump balls. Lack of bulk hinders his ability to play press coverage. Has been susceptible to double moves. Average at best in run support.
